SGT Jonathan N. Hartman

A Co. 2-37 Armor

Born:24 Nov 1976 Portsmouth, Virginia

Killed in Action: 17 Apr 2004 (aged 27) in Diwaniyah, Iraq

Burial:  Miami Cemetery, Corwin, Ohio

SGT Hartman was killed in an ambush in Diwaniyah, Iraq at just 27 years old. Hartman was born and grew up in Portsmouth, VA, but moved to Florida after high school. Though he really wanted to be a pilot, Jon enlisted in 1999 as a 19k. In the Army, he quickly earned a reputation as an outstanding young Soldier marked for advancement into the NCO Corps. The day before he was killed, Hartman called his mother to tell her he had just been extended for 90 days. He was preparing to go into the field living off his tank and would not be in touch with her for quite some time. He assured her that there was no reason to worry because he would be safe inside his tank with God as his rear guard. Sadly, this turned out not to be true. Hartman”s company was loaded on HETs and convoying through Diwaniyah when they were ambushed. Jon was part of the two man crews with the tanks and fell during this fight.
