PV2 Rey D. Cuervo, 1/2 ACR, fell in Baghdad, Iraq at age 24 while attached to TF 2-37 Armor. Rey, a cavalry scout, was on a mounted patrol when an improvised explosive device hit his vehicle killing him and wounding five other Soldiers and eight Iraqi personnel. Born in Tampico, Mexico, Cuervo was a legal resident of the United States when he realized a dream by enlisting in the Army in 1999. In one of the last conversations they ever had, Cuervo told his sister “he didn’t need a paper to tell him that he was an American.” She stated that “For him being an American was in his heart. He was serving his country.” Rey was posthumously granted full U.S. citizenship.
